In little over three weeks time Ubuntu 14.10 will be officially released to the general public. But, if you cannot wait that long, you can download the pre-release beta here.

The new upcoming release, code named, Utopic Unicorn, is an incremental improvement over 14.04 LTS released earlier this year. Packages like LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird mail client are upgraded to the latest as well as the internals like the newer version of Linux Kernel and Unity interface were upgraded as well.

The late year Ubuntu releases, (done each October) are short term releases with incremental improvements over the previous ones. They are supported for at least 6 months and users are expected to upgrade to the latest and the greatest after that. It is therefore, targeting hardcore geeks who want to tinker with the best out there.

For the rest of us, it is best recommended to use an LTS release (current LTS is 14.04) which is supported for good five years. Usually outliving the life of the computer where it is installed.

Ubuntu releases an update to its OS twice a year. In the earlier years (2006-2012), we used to see huge improvements in the OS with each new release. But since 2012, it has been more incremental than revolutionary. Maybe, it is because, Canonical now focuses on mobile OS Ubuntu than desktop and therefore, new things will pop up there than here.

However, the stability is still one of the hall marks of the Ubuntu OS and even the beta just released will be hard to crash. No wonder, it is the most popular open source Linux based operating system out there.
