A lot of my friends have asked me to install Ubuntu Linux on their computers as an alternate to Microsoft Windows. And many more have asked for a suitable and easy to follow guide for doing just that. So here it is. A simple and easy visual guide that I have put together for everyone, even non-techies to use. I have deliberately tried to keep it simple, easy and visual so that anyone can use it to install the operating system. Ubuntu installation is anyways a breeze and this guide will only make it more so.

Do not worry about the version of Ubuntu that you are installing. All versions are similar when it comes to installation. Hence, Ubuntu 11.04, 12.04, 12.10 etc will all install in a similar fashion.

You can download the latest version of Ubuntu from their website at:

Why I have chosen Ubuntu? In my personal experience of using it almost on a daily basis, this is probably one of the most easy, intuitive and stable linux distribution out there. Easy to learn, extremely user friendly and requires almost zero management skills. And, best of all, it comes with thousands of ready to use apps/software. Which can be automatically installed once selected from the Software Catalog.

Ubuntu is totally free and opensource implementation of Linux. As they have mentioned on their website:

Fast, free and incredibly easy to use, the Ubuntu operating system powers millions of desktop PCs, laptops and servers around the world. Ubuntu will work with your existing PC files, printers, cameras, music players and smartphones — and it comes with thousands of free apps.

My presentation here takes just 10 steps for the installation. It might take you about 20 minutes for the whole process to go through.

The presentation assumes that you have downloaded Ubuntu and have it written on a CD or USB before installing. And have booted your computer with it.
